1.2m sign up in support of 1Malaysia concept

KUALA LUMPUR: A campaign to collect one million signatures in support of the 1Malaysia concept exceeded its target within a day.

The campaign, launched simultaneously at 212 locations nationwide yesterday, kicked off at 9am and by 6pm, more than 1.2 million signatures were collected.

Earlier, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan in launching the campaign organised by the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma), said it was for the silent majority who wanted to express their support for the 1Malaysia concept.

"They (silent majority) look for the right and peaceful channel.

"The Indians, Chinese and Malays who sign realise that we are all not enemies, but friends, working together, not competing, to bring the country to greater heights," he said after launching the campaign.

He said the signatures represented the people who wanted unity, stability, peace and prosperity in the country to be preserved through the 1Malaysia concept.

Kimma president Senator Datuk Syed Ibrahim Abdul Kader said more than 100,000 signatures were collected last night in Jalan Masjid India and the Bukit Jalil National Stadium here.

He said more than 2,000 Kimma members were at shopping centres and bus terminals nationwide to collect the signatures.

"We targeted high traffic areas like shopping centres to collect the signatures. In the Federal Territory alone, there were 15 locations," he said.

He said the signatures would be handed over to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at a function to be held later in Putrajaya.
